The Venerable Arthur J. Monk, former Archdeacon of the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut, passed away June 29, 2014 in Shelton, Conn. He was 95. Arthur Jameson Monk was born December 1, 1918 in Fall River, Mass. He was graduated in 1942 from New York University with a B.S. in business administration and was employed by the New York Trust Co. and then Pan American World Airways. During World War II he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Following the war he enrolled at Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, where he earned a master’s in divinity degree in 1949, the same year he was ordained a priest. Following his ordination he was named vicar of St. John’s Church in Yalesville, Conn. From 1951-62 he served as rector of Trinity Church
in Bristol, Conn., after which he was named rector of Christ Church in Stratford, Conn., the oldest church in the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut, where he served until 1973. In that year he was named
Diocesan Archdeacon, in effect chief administrative officer of the diocese, representing 77 churches in southwestern Connecticut. He also served as a chaplain attaining the rank of major in the Connecticut National Guard, was president and a trustee of Berkeley Divinity School and received the Bishop’s Award for Distinguished Service for the Church and Community. Following his nominal retirement in 1982, Fr. Monk remained active in the church until well into his 80s, serving as pastoral associate at Trinity Church in Seymour, Conn. He also continued to take services at St. Paul’s, his summer chapel in Otis, Mass., near his longtime vacation home in Monterey, Mass. He is predeceased by his wife, Mary Oliver Quackenbos Monk. He is survived by three children — William Thomas Monk and his wife, Diane Monk of Atlanta, Ga., Roger Martin Monk and his wife, Darlene Monk of Warwick, R.I., and Nancy Alice Monk and her husband, Michael Bingham of Stratford, Conn. — and five grandchildren: Ellen Pixler of Chicago, Ill., Christina Geruso of Johnston, R.I., Susan Monk of Atlanta, Ga., Jason Monk of Pawtucket, R.I. and Christopher Monk of Columbia, S.C. A Service of Requiem will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 5 at Trinity Church, 91 Church St., Seymour. Interment to follow in Trinity Cemetery.
