Obituary for Bernice Brooks (Tompkins)

SEYMOUR – Mrs. Bernice H. Brooks, age 93, beloved wife of the late Alfred Brooks, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2008 in the Lutheran Home of Southbury. Bernice was born on January 25, 1915 in East Florenceville, New Brunswick, Canada, daughter of the late Leon and Violet Chase Tompkins. She moved to Connecticut in 1951. She was employed at the Unity Shirt Shop, the Shelton Shirt Shop, in the office of G.C. Murphy Co. in Ansonia and retired after many years at Kings and Ames Department Store in Seymour. Bernice is survived by her son, Borden (Joan) Brooks and her daughter, Ruth Ewen, grandsons, David (Gail) and Donald Brooks, Scott (Deborah) and Mark (friend Joy Vars) Ewen, granddaughter, Cathy (Edward) Warnquist and 11 great grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Everett (Elizabeth)Tompkins and many nieces and nephews in Canada
In addition to her husband Bernice was predeceased by her brothers, Edmond, Cecil, Morris, Allen and Wendel Tompkins and her sister, Verna Jones all in Canada. Bernice loved her family and her Lord. She was an avid knitter and crochetier as well as a great cook. Her home made bread and rolls, potato salad and especially her mustard pickles were family favorites. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends especially those at the Lutheran Home who took such wonderful care of her. Family and friends may call on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Ralph E. Hull Funeral Home, 161 West Church Street, Seymour. Funeral Service will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. in the Immanuel Lutheran Church, 25 Great Hill Road, Oxford. Interment to follow in Great Hill Cemetery, Seymour. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lutheran Home of Southbury,
