Condolences

Condolence From: Jerry Mead
Condolence: The greatest memories of growing up were the 'spur of the moment' Sunday trips to 'the Farm'..upon pulling in the driveway there would be uncle Elmer outside under a shade tree smoking a cigar..the giant beehive hung on the back porch..the weathered farm buildings, everything was timeless, according to photos of me and my brother Owen first visit when we could hardly walk..nothing had changed.
Then visiting aunt Sadie, Evelyn, and uncle Elmer on the porch..after an appropriate time we would get the nod from dad and we would run outside and explore the old sheds filled with interesting tools and machines and then see what was going on with the cousins Jeff, Susie, and Linda,..we would make our way down the fields to the spring and eventually to the junk dump ... that is when we ran into Bud..doing something in the fields, bringing in the cows for milking...we would end up in the hay loft above the barn and jump around till we were wheezing from the dust...and then go into the barn while the cows were being milked, looking for the shy cats and dodging the spray and 'cow pies' from the cows in their stocks... watching Bud pour the warm fresh milk into the stainless steel Milk cooler and hearing the music played on the old radio up on a rafter covered with cobwebs... seeing the new born calves in the stalls in the back of the barn...
When it was time for Dinner, we would all gather around the table , with fresh milk and vegetables out of their garden, Aunt Sadie always made a real nice supper..then the movies and slides would be shown and Bud would always drop in never sitting but standing..as he watched our family History flash on the screen...It was for us as 'American' as it could be..a time treasured in my heart..it seemed like time stood still every time we visited...With Bud passing and the sprawling houses that took over the open fields..only photos, old films and memories..but He will be remembered with all of our beloved family who have passed on to glory...

Condolence From: Nikki St. Julien Smith aka "Curly"
Condolence: Farming the "tough" way
from sunrise to sunset
A harder worker
I never have met

A quintessential Yankee
practical, stubborn, and proud
An opinion he'd voice
Always out loud

He could fix anything(it seemed)
with nails, screws or wood
And if he couldn't he'd say,
"You don't need that...it's no good."

Childhood memories of summers
spent on his farm
Have come flooding back to me
now that he's gone

Covered head to toe
in dust, manure, and sweat
He'd say to me "Curley, come here
you haven't hugged me yet!"

I'd shriek "eeewwww"
and run like the wind
But the promise of a tractor ride
would bring me back again

Jaunts on his tractor
were a spectacular treat
He'd say, "Hop up on the fender
and watch out for your feet."

As the years passed by
and the farm was all gone
He'd still climb on that tractor
and nudge it along

Cutting hay, plowing snow
whatever he could do
Being one with his tractor
was all he knew

I'll think of him when
I smell freshly cut hay
Or the scent of cow manure
on a warm summer's day

I smile as I envision
his very last ride
Up the hill on his tractor
to the "other side"

I will miss you, Uncle Bud

Condolence: Uncle Bud will be missed by so many people. Our trips to Connecticut will not be the same. We will miss walking down from mom's house to visit Uncle Bud and have our glass of wine with him and mom. We have such fond memories of seeing Uncle Bud and Aunt Flora. From the family picnics to walking through Aunt Flora's garden to watching Uncle Bud on his trackor with Rene in the bucket. There are so many wonderful moments that we will cherish forever. We love you Uncle and we will miss you always. Love from your nephew and niece in Texas

Condolence: I began "helping out" at the Mead farm soon after my brother Paul and I moved to Seymour in 1955. I would help bale hay, cut corn, sweep the barn, feed calves and do all the wonderful things farm life had to offer. Along with my father Buddy taught me his wok ethic and his love for the land. He was a fine man and I will miss him. I am so glad to have been a very small part of his life.
God Bless and keep him in his heart.

Condolence: It is with great sadness that I read the news of Buddy's passing. My memories of his smile and kindness are vivid, back to when my Dad would take me down the street to his farm. I enjoyed his company, and am so glad that he attended my wedding. He was a dear man, and a wonderful friend to my Dad. If there is a spirit world, I hope that Buddy and my Dad are hanging out, trading stories together! Thank you, Buddy, for sharing your presence with us on this earth! I will miss you dearly.
