Life Story for George Sophy

SOUTHBURY, CT: George Sophy, age 80 of Southbury entered into peaceful rest May 18, 2009; he was the beloved husband of sixty two years to Ann M. (Bennett) Sophy. Mr. Sophy was born October 15, 1928 in Ogdensburg, NY, son of the late Joseph and Hazel (Burnett) Sophy. George was retired from the Exide Battery Corporation, and also from Bridgeport Fitting Company; he was also a former President of AFLCIO, Fairfield. George was a peacetime veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was an Honorary Lifetime Member of the BPOE Elks Lodge # 2220, Fairfield. Mr. Sophy loved baseball and was an avid NY Yankees fan. In addition to his wife Mr. Sophy leaves his loving family including three daughters, Judy Connell and her husband Edward of Oxford, Joann Michaud of Fairfield, and Gigi Langston of Oxford, a sister, Bernice Nutting of Watertown, NY, six grandchildren, Brent Michaud, Brooke Berthold, Sara Langston, Bennett Langston, Tyler Langston, and Ann Marie Manjuck, also several nieces and nephews, and, son-in-law, William Manjuck of Darien, and former son-in-law Martin Langston of Naugatuck. His daughter, Bernice Manjuck, grandson Brian Berthold, brother Joseph Sophy, and sisters, Carol Brassard, Lillis Rogers, and Joan Marie Rogers predeceased him. A Memorial Service in celebration of George’s life will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. in the Oxford United Church of Christ Congregational, 3 Academy Road, Oxford. Interment with full Military Honors will be in Southford Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call also Friday prior to the service from 10:00 am to 1:00 p.m. in the Ralph E.
