Obituary for Grace Schade (DeSandre)

Grace D. Schade of Southbury, CT died on July 22, 2021 at her home. She was the widow of Edmund J. Schade. Mrs. Schade was born February 26, 1924 in Meriden, daughter of the late Louis and Antonia (Darin) DeSandre. She was an Oxford resident since 1950 until moving to Southbury in 1980.

Mrs. Schade was a graduate of Meriden High School class of 1941, and also from Teachers College of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Education. Before moving to Oxford, she held a position with the Social Security Administration in both Meriden and New Britain.

While residing in Oxford, she was a substitute teacher in area towns. For 12 years, she was Chairman of the Naugatuck Valley Red Cross blood mobile drives in Oxford. She was a Communicant, and had volunteered in various capacities at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, and had been a facilitator for the Small Christian Community at the church. Mrs. Schade was a member of the Oxford Bicentennial Historic House Committee which was responsible for the publishing of the book, “Early Houses of Oxford”. After moving to Southbury in 1980, she became a volunteer for the Southbury Food Bank for many years.

Mrs. Schade is survived by her children, Gary Schade (Cathleen), Richard Schade, Sandra Murphy, Thomas Schade (Deborah Grover), and Stephen Schade (Kate); her grandchildren, Eric Schade, Elizabeth Robinson (Peter), Brayden Murphy, and Wesley, Louis, and Charles Schade; her great grandchildren, Parker Grace and Cate Robinson, Kaedan Fennelly, and Ryan and Donovan Murphy. Her siblings, Tranquilo DeSandre, Jack DeSandre, Irma Ferrigno, Lena Rapuano, and son-in-law, Walter Murphy all predeceased her.

There are no calling hours. All services are private. Interment will also be private at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Meriden. Memorial Gifts may be sent to the Southbury Food Bank, 88 Main Street South, Southbury, CT 06488. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ralph E. Hull Funeral Home, 161 West Church Street, Seymour.
