Obituary for Sally Schiffer (Walsh)

SEYMOUR, CONNECTICUT: Sally Walsh Schiffer, age 91 of Seymour entered into peaceful rest on July 11, 2023. She was the beloved wife of the late Donald Bryant Schiffer Sr. who passed away in 2001. Sally was born Sarah Catherine Walsh on May 5, 1932, in Bridgeport CT to Anna (Crinock) and John Walsh. The 8th born of 10 children, Sally grew up alongside her 9 siblings in Shelton, CT on Lane Street.Sally attended Huntington school, at which she was salutatorian of her class, and Shelton high school. Soon after graduating high school, Sally started working at Remington Arms as an Accounts Payable Clerk. Here, she met Donald Bryant Schiffer who was working as a Tool and Die Maker. The two fell in love and married in 1959. They built and moved into a home at 176 Nichols Avenue in Shelton, where Sally would live until 2020. In 1961 she gave birth to her beloved son Donald Bryant Schiffer Jr., and two years later in 1963 she gave birth to her wonderful second son James Beardsley Schiffer. Sally retired from Remington Arms and began working as a bank teller at Derby Savings Bank in Huntington. Later in life, Sally began working as a bookkeeper at her son Don’s business, Don’s Auto Service in Stratford. She would work here until 87 years of age. She was a longtime and devoted Communicant of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Huntington, and an active member of the crochet club at the church. A skilled artist, Sally would crochet prayer shawls, blankets, and other items to donate to those in need. She passed her love of crocheting to her granddaughter, Paula, and they would often help each other with tough patterns. Sally also enjoyed reading, taking walks, completing crossword puzzles, and putting together complex jigsaw puzzles. A creature of habit, for many years Sally loved having fish and chips on Fridays and going out for some ravioli on Saturdays with her son Donald and his family. She was also known for her sweet tooth and would often go looking for “something sweet”. Sally was an avid New York Mets fan her whole life, though she would often complain about their performance. In the last few years, Sally struggled with dementia, but she never lost her fiery spirit. The family would like to thank the staff at Atria Larson memory care in Hamden for taking such wonderful care of Sally for the last year.

Sally leaves behind her loving family including her son, James Beardsley Schiffer and his wife Norma (Goduto) of Seymour; her brother Thomas Walsh; her daughter-in-law Jeanette Schiffer of Shelton; grandchildren, Amanda and her husband Frank PereiraIII of Bethel; Paula Schiffer and her fiancé Manny Guzman of Bristol; Molly Schiffer of Seymour; Donald III, Christopher, and Timothy Schiffer of Shelton; her cherished great granddaughters, Magnolia and Sabrina Pereira of Bethel and Cecelia Schiffer of Bristol; a brother-in-law David Schiffer and his wife Evelyn of Southbury; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Donald Bryant Schiffer Sr.; her beloved sonDonald Bryant Schiffer,Jr.; her sisters, Gladys Federowicz, Alice Kepchar, Dorothy Pellitier, Marion Kotenski, and Ann Bove; her brothers, Edward, Harry, John; her brother-in-law James Schiffer; and her beloved dogs, Samantha and Homer.

Calling Hours will be Monday July 17th form 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM at the Ralph E. Hull Funeral Home, 161 West Church Street, Seymour. A Celebration of Sally’s life and a Funeral Service of Requiem Eucharist will follow at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (at the Historic Church) 25 Church Street, Huntington at 11:00 AM.
