Obituary for Alice "Grandma" Gray (Treat)

Alice "Grandma" Gray (Treat)
OXFORD, CT and OAKHAM, MA: Alice (Treat) Gray, age 89 of Oakham, MA, formerly of Oxford, CT entered into peaceful rest April 13, 2012 in Worcester, MA; she was the beloved wife of the late Joseph George Gray who was the love of her life, and were wed April 21, 1943 at Christ Church in Quaker Farms. She was born in Oxford on February 27, 1923, daughter of the late Robert H. and Leila (Hubbell) Treat. Alice graduated from Seymour High School in 1941 and then from Ansonia Business College; she then worked for John Hancock Insurance. Alice lived in Oxford over 80 years and dutifully volunteered on many town and church organizations. She tickled the ivories as organist for Christ Church for 14 years; she was an active member of the 4-H Club, Parent Teacher Association, the Republican Women's Organization, and had served for more than 60 years as an Air Raid Warden. Mrs. Gray was a member of Oxford Grange #194 serving in many capacities there including the Women's Auxiliary, and was President from 1962 - 1965. In 2003 she moved to Oakham to be with her loving son Arthur and his wife The Rev. Joanne Gray. Alice was an avid sports fan, especially the Boston Red Sox, to the point where she'd be up late watching the game and yelling to the Manager to send offending players back to the minors! Alice or "Grandma" as many knew her was quick with a wise crack and a loving smile; she was a flirt to the very end, and very much enjoyed her years with the Oakham Seniors.

In addition to her son and daughter-in-law, Alice leaves her loving family of 7 grandchildren, Julie Banks, Joseph Gray, Melissa Gray-Murphy, Jacquelyne Jones, Jerie Phinney, Julie Sleeper, and Janice Sleeper, 6 great grandchildren, Zachary Banks, Jack Murphy, Jaime Jones, Matthew Jones, Christopher Phinney, Megan Phinney, and great-great grandchild Zella Desherer, also 2 sisters-in-law, Muriel and Pearl Treat. Her brothers, Robert, Carlton, and Alvin Treat predeceased her.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 10:00 a.m. from the Ralph E. Hull Funeral Home, 161 West Church St., Seymour, to Christ Episcopal Church, 470 Quaker Farms Rd., Oxford for a service of Requiem Eucharist at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be in Brookside Cemetery, Oxford.
