Obituary for Edmund Schade

SOURHBURY, CT: Edmund Judd "Ned" Schade, age 80 of Bristol Town Road, entered into peaceful rest February 15, 2004 at his home, he was the beloved husband of Grace (DeSandre) Schade. Mr. Schade was born October 21, 1923 in New Britain, son of the late Alford and Laura (Judd) Schade. He was a resident of Oxford before moving to Southbury twenty four years ago. Edmund was the retired Superintendent of Schools for the Town of Oxford for fourteen years, retiring in 1981. Mr. Schade was a graduate of the Class of 1941 from New Britain High School, a graduate of New Britain Teachers College in 1945 with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Education, a graduate of Columbia University in 1946 with a Masters Degree in Elementary Education Administration, Edmund earned a Six Year Degree in Education from the University of Connecticut in 1963. Mr. Schade was a former teacher at the Alcott School in Wolcott from 1946 to 1948, was a teaching principal at the Lewis School, Wolcott in 1949, then became a teaching principal at the Oxford Center School from 1949 to 1951, after which he became the supervising principal there until 1965. From 1965 to his retirement in 1981 Edmund was the Superintendent of Schools of Oxford. He wrote specifications to convert the Oxford Great Oak School to a grade 7 to 12 high school. Mr. Schade was involved with numerous community activities including, Oxford Library Board for 20 years, and was a two term president, for ten years he was a Corporator of the Griffin Hospital, Derby, a Past President of the Valley Parent-Child Resource Center, for ten years he served on the Board of Directors of the Valley United Way, a twenty year member of the Board of Directors of the Oxford Unit of the Salvation Army, served as chairman of the former Oxford Disaster Association, a two term President, and twelve year member of the Oxford Lions Club, Oxford Little League for five years, and served as President for two terms, a member of the Oxford Bicentennial Historic House Committee, and was a member of the committee responsible for the publishing of the book "Early Houses of Oxford’. Mr. Schade’s community efforts in the Town of Southbury include, being a former member of the Board of Directors of the Southbury Historical Society, and served as their Vice President for two years. He won an award from the Society for petitioning for the Scenic Road Proposal, he was a docent at the Bullet Hill School. He was the Society’s Trip Coordinator, member of the Historic Building Committee, and he won the Society’s Historic Preservation Award. Mr. Schade’s professional activities include, the Connecticut Association of School Superintendents, the Litchfield County Superintendents Association for ten years, and was their Secretary and Treasurer for two terms, the Naugatuck Valley Superintendents Association for ten years, and their President for two years, an organizer and member of the Valley Association of Project Concern for ten years, and was their President for two terms.
Besides his wife Edmund leaves his loving family including, four sons, Gary Schade and his wife Cathleen of Southbury, Richard Schade of Oxford, Thomas Schade, and his wife Deborah of Roxbury, and Stephen Schade of Manchester, NH, a daughter, Sandra Murphy and her husband Walter of West Newbury, MA, and three grandchildren, Eric and Elizabeth Schade both of Southbury, and Brayden Murphy of West Newbury, MA.
Funeral services in celebration of Edmund’s life will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in the Ralph E. hull Funeral Home, 161 West Church Street, Seymour. Interment will be private in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Meriden.
