Obituary for Robert Davidson Galt

Robert Davidson Galt, age 73, of Oxford, CT, entered the Lord’s Heaven on April 9, 2004, after a brief but brave and courageous battle with cancer. He was the son of the late Edward and May Davidson Galt and was born in Troon, Scotland on November 11, 1930. Bob was the devoted, very caring and thoughtful husband of Mary Bishop Dalling Galt for 23 years and will be sorely missed by her for all of his kind deeds and love. Bob joined the US Army as an infantryman during the Korean War era and was a member of the Army’s Honor Guard. After his tour with the Army, he continued his service with the US Naval Reserve. His employment history included Dicta-Phone, Norden Systems, and General Data-Com, from where he retired after years of dedicated employment. Bob had many hobbies, including being a jigsaw puzzle expert and could often be seen working on a crossword puzzle with his gummy bears or chocolate bar nearby. He could fix anything and had the patience of a saint, as he was Mr. Fix-It. Bob enjoyed building wood birdhouses and flower boxes and would paint, stain, or wallpaper for family members or anyone that asked him. He was also an avid golfer. Bob’s joys in life were watching his two grandsons, Ross and Matthew, grow up to be fine young men. On payday during his working years while Ross was growing up, Bob would take him to Child World for a toy and then to the Marina to watch the boats. Bob and Matthew were movie enthusiasts and went as often as possible. He also loved going with Mary to watch Ross and Matthew play ice hockey, as he was their biggest fan. A favorite past time was attending the Sherman Green, Fairfield, concerts with Mary and their close friends, Ceil and Chew. He also enjoyed the Golden Oldies trips with Pitney Bowes and day trips to the Casino for the slot machines. Bob adored and truly loved his wife, Mary, and would always accompany her during her walks at Southbury Green and he would treat her to the Old Sawmill in Oxford for fish and chips, his favorite. Bob was a member of the Fidelity- St. John’s Lodge number 3 in Fairfield, where he was twice a worshipful master. Bob will be sorely missed by all who knew him, as he always had a kind word to say and a smile to match. He was a true gentleman, who always put his wife and her family first. We will miss his love and special sayings with his Scottish accent, but he will not be forgotten by us and will be in our hearts and prayers forever. You’re a good fellow and you will suffer no more, our beloved Bob.
Along with his wife Mary, Bob is survived by his two sons, Grant R. Dalling and his wife Kerry, Ross T. Dalling, his wife Colleen and their two children Ross K. and Matthew R. Dalling, all of Oxford, CT. He is also survived by two brothers, Graham and Gordon Galt of California, and nephews Ross Galt of Naugatuck and Bruce Galt of Stratford, as well as other nieces and nephews. Bob is also survived by his two daughters Barbara and Norma and their families of Arizona. Bob was predeceased by his parents and his brother, John Galt.
