Obituary for Russell Smith

HAMDEN, CT: Russell Smith, age 76 of Park Road, entered into rest August 8, 2002 at the Hospital of St. Raphael, New Haven after a brief illness; he was the beloved husband of Betty J. Lilley Smith. Russell resided in Hamden for the past 3 years, formerly of New Haven for 7 years, and prior to that in Pittsfield, MA for 20 years. Russell was retired professional chef, and worked at the following restaurants: the Berkshire Hilton, Pittsfield, MA where he was the Executive Chef, the Oakn’ Spruce Resort, Lenox, MA, Pittsfield Country Club, and in CT at Amarante’s in New Haven, Duchess Diner in New Haven, and also West Haven, the Colonial Diner in Hamden, and he had also served as a troubleshooting chef for the Treadway Corp. in New Jersey, and Rhode Island. Most recently Russell worked as a security guard at Harborside Health-Arden House, Hamden. Mr. Smith was an avid fisherman, and he enjoyed playing billiards at the Hamden Senior Center. He had a genuine love of nature.
Besides his wife he leaves his loving family including, 1 son Edward T. Smith of South Toms River, NJ, 1 daughter, Kirstie E. Smith of Torrington, 1 brother, Edward T. Smith of New Haven, 2 sisters, Eleanor Gomez of Hamden, and Ann Sanderson of New Haven. Also, 7 stepchildren, 5 grandchildren, 12 step-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. His daughter Carrie Brown predeceased him.
A memorial service in celebration of Russell’s life will be held 5:00 p.m., Saturday August `24, 2002 at the Harborside Health-Arden House, 850 Mix Avenue, Hamden. Russell’s family will receive family and friends at Arden House from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. prior to the service . Interment will be at the convenience of the family. Please omit flowers.
