Lessons Learned from Larry

My sister Carol lost her husband this week. Larry Soisson was as fine a fellow you could hope to meet, a friend and brother to me, a good husband and beloved father. Larry loved cars and western PA, but don’t say he was from Connellsville. He was from South Connellsville and darn proud of it. Larry started coming around Aetna Street in the late ‘50’s and by the early ‘60’s was spending quite a bit of time there. I was the little brother from Hades and would never leave them alone. Mom worked the afternoon shift at the hospital and “Big Jim” was often on the road so I was able to get away with being a pest. My favorite game was the “shakedown”. I started asking for a nickel to leave them alone, then a dime, and finally at one point getting a quarter! By then Larry had enough. Unbeknownst to me, one evening he hid his reel-to-reel tape recorder behind the sofa and recorded my act. Mom came home from work, he played the tape for her and that was the end of my shakedown operation. Larry taught me that I wasn’t quite as clever as I thought; a good lesson to learn.
